We do not build a solution simply because that is how the industry has always done it. We start with the actual problem, test the assumptions around it and engineer a different route.

Curiosity, self-teaching, unconventional backgrounds and different ways of thinking are strengths. Ability should be demonstrated by what somebody can create, not inferred only from credentials or job titles.

We are building an environment where technically curious people have the autonomy, tools and opportunity to turn ambitious ideas into working technology.

Most organisations need an idea to prove its return before it has been built far enough to reveal its value. That filters out strange, cross-disciplinary and genuinely new work.

We want to reverse that sequence. Build enough to learn. Follow the evidence. Invest in what proves useful. Treat the knowledge and digital assets from every honest experiment as outputs, even when it might not be immediately profitable.

Built Different begins with a working portfolio across consumer software, infrastructure, aerial imaging and interactive experiences. Each project started with curiosity and became something real.

WHY THIS EXISTS

Built Different was founded by Bruce Devlin, a self-taught Scotland-based technology engineer whose own route into the industry did not follow the expected path.

After spending much of his childhood and early adulthood as a full-time carer, Bruce entered technology through an eight-week Generation UK & Ireland programme. He progressed to Senior Quality Engineer and was recognised as a Rising Star at the 2026 ScotlandIS Digital Technology Awards.

This company turns that experience into a practical commitment: find capability earlier, give it a real project and let the work show what is possible.
